Yes of course you learn the states of your own country, but I doubt you learn the states and regions of Italy, Belgium or co.^^

They do teach this stuff in school. As to why some kids don't retain this is beyond me, but it's not the schools fault. But I do have to say that for a lot of foreigners the US consists of three places NY, Disneyworld and California.

Believe me, I will take some accidental guy from the street from Poland and USA, and when I compare their knowledge the USA guy will be a clown. ( Sorry for mistakes related with grammar etc.)

I acknowledge your points, but MY point is that anyone I spoke to was unfamiliar with any place west of New York...even general whereabouts, mind you, NOT exact location.
Bottom line: Not ALL Americans are ignorant, and those who aren't--are tired of constantly being picked on.
(Saarland is a state on the southwest side of Germany bordering France.)
