Merle was on tour with Buddy Holly back when he died in the plane accident. Merle said once in an interview that him and Buddy flipped a coin for that seat on the plane. When Buddy won he said to Merle" I hope your bus breaks down".Merle said "I hope your plane crashes." He said in the interview it took him decades to realize it wasn't his fault that plane crashed.
